Sony calls the PlayStation 4 "the world's most powerful console" and, speaking to Edge magazine, numerous game developers described the performance difference between the PS4 and Xbox One as "significant" and "obvious". The console enables interactivity with other services and devices through the following methods: The PlayStation App, designed to enhance gameplay by using iOS and Android mobile devices; Now, a cloud-based subscription gaming service that offers streaming video game content; and wireless Remote Play.
It enables users to activate the PlayStation 4 from a distance away, in order to continue playing on a secondary screen, such as PlayStation Vita, a Sony tablet or smartphone. Sony have placed considerable emphasis on social gameplay. The new controller incorporates a "share" button, enabling owners to capture screenshots and video. Players can broadcast their progress or spectate gameplay streamed live from friends, and a feature named Share Play allows users to invite a friend to join a play session, even if they do not own a copy of the game. In designing the system, Sony worked with software developer Bungie, who offered their input on the controller and how to make it better for shooting games. In 2012, Sony began shipping development kits to game developers, consisting of a modified PC running the AMD Accelerated Processing Unit chipset. These development kits were known as "Orbis".

The DualShock 4 is the PlayStation 4's controller. It is similar to the DualShock 3, with several new features. One new feature is a built-in two-point capacitive touch pad on the front of the controller, which can be clicked. The controller supports motion detection via a three-axis gyroscope and three-axis accelerometer and vibration. It includes a non-removable,rechargeable 3.7 V lithium-ion battery tentatively capable of storing 1000 mAh. The tentative design weighs 210 g and has dimensions of 162 ◊ 52 ◊ 98 mm. The top of the gamepad features a light bar with three LEDs that illuminate in different colors, which can be used to identify players by matching the colors of the characters they are controlling in a game, or to provide enhanced feedback or immersion by changing patterns or colors in reaction to gameplay. It is also used in conjunction with the PlayStation Camera to judge the positions and movements of multiple players. The light bar was developed for Project Morpheus.
PlayStation is forward compatible with the DualShock 4, originally only via a microUSB cable. Firmware update 4.60 for the PS3 added wireless connectivity, however motion and vibration functions are not supported. As the START and SELECT buttons are no longer present, the SHARE and OPTIONS respectively replace them. The PlayStation Home button has no function.
